Buesaco, in the department of Nariño, has been racking up accolades with multiple top finishes in Colombia’s Cup of Excellence auctions over the last few years. Some credit is owed to the volcanoes (Doña Juana in the north and Galeras in the south), which are responsible for many of the rich mineral traits found in the soil composition. Nariño’s proximity to the equator means intense exposure to the sun (relatively constant and powerful year-round), which influences the cherry maturation rate.
Buesaco, in particular, has an interesting micro-climate wherein warm air rises from deep canyons at night and acts like a protective blanket for the coffee plants. As a result of these combined attributes, coffee plants passively absorb the sun’s energy during the day and then come alive at night when the conditions are less harsh. This translates into concentrated flowering and long cherry maturation periods.
All of these factors can produce exceptional coffee but there is a human factor that cannot be overlooked. This lot represents a classic Buesaco profile traceable to small farms in the region. Farms are just a few acres in size, which is small enough for the producer to carefully handle all of the post-harvest processing on their own farms. With their own micro-mills, they carefully harvest cherries, de-pulp, ferment, wash, and gently dry the coffee.

La Asociación Sostenible de Café de Guatemala (ASDECAFE) is a sustainable, second-level coffee association in Guatemala with more than 1,000 active producer members. It was founded in September of 2013 by six small, first-level producer organizations and today includes seven co-ops in the regions of Huehuetenango and El Quiche. ASDECAFE received Organic certification around 2014. The association is committed to sustainability and environmental protections, the equitable distribution of all generated income, transparency in business, and long-term relationships with customers and suppliers. It's also intently focused on using good agricultural and post-harvest practices to improve its members' coffee quality and access to international markets.
By coming together under the umbrella of ASDECAFE, smaller cooperatives can experience savings, such as through shared transportation costs and by splitting certifications fees, which helps their earned premiums go farther. ASDECAFE also offers services including technical assistance, training and pre-financing. Working together also gives them more bargaining strength and enables them to build relationships with importers—instead of relying individually on coyotes—which offers better prices and long term stability.

Dukunde Kawa is a producer in Rwanda known for its exceptionally bright and memorable coffees as well as its exceptional business structure. The cooperative carries multiple certifications for its various washing stations including Fair Trade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and UTZ, with more than 80% of its workforce being women. First organized in 2000, this Northern Province-located organization has received sustainability awards from the SCA as well as placing in the top positions in Rwanda's Cup of Excellence competition. Today, this cooperative has over 2,000 farmer members. One of the highest elevations that Dukunde Kawa serves, Mbilima was established in 2005. Thanks to a mineral-rich soil and lush environment, the washing station and its contributing farmers successfully achieved organic certification in 2015.
Despite its relatively diminutive size compared to other East Africa coffee-producing countries, Rwanda's coffee has an important history and terroir entirely unique to the rest of the continent. The snappy acidity, stone fruit flavors, and fragrant herbaceousness found in Rwanda's coffee is still completely unique to bourbon varieties produced anywhere else in the world. Producer groups like Dukunde Kawa cherish their farmers' potential and are learning to maximize the quality and variety available from Rwanda's most promising terroirs.

It brings us our first blend. This is the Space Dodo. Given seasonal changes and available offerings, origins included in this blend may slightly vary. Siltepec is located in the center of Chiapas, and El Jaguar Siltepec comes from the high-altitude area of the Sierra Madre, bordering the biosphere reserve El Trifuno, which is the habitat of an Endemic Bird Area, “El Quetzal.” This ecological region represents 30 percent of the flora in all of the Chiapas territory.
The microclimate in this region creates a cloud forest, due to the Soconuscu rainforest zone around the Novillero River. The weather is humid with lots of shade, cool conditions at night and excellent soil, which together create a perfect environment for the development of specialty coffee.
This coffee comes from a group of small producers who are involved in the NKG BLOOM initiative. The beans were harvested and processed by hand, then de-pulped, fermented, washed and finally dried in the sun.
NKG export company Exportadora de Café California (ECC) created Por Más Café in 2014, to address the coffee rust crisis. Por Más Café is now part of NKG BLOOM, an effort to end poverty in the coffee supply chain by empowering producers to run their farms at full potential.

Located in the mountainous and moist cultivation area in the BenaBena Valley in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea, this washed coffee is produced by the Korofeigu Cooperative Society, comprised of 97 producers. Originating in 1945, 13 teenagers from the Korofeigu and other surrounding areas were selected to be sent for a newly created school for training in coffee production. Since then, coffee has emerged as the most important agricultural crop in Papua New Guinea, directly or indirectly providing the major source of income for a third of the country’s population.
NGHCE (New Guinea Highlands Coffee Exports) has recently begun a program to assist farmers in obtaining their Organic certification. This coffee is a product of this initiative, which also provides extensive work on HIV/AIDS prevention, financial management, gender equality awareness, coffee husbandry and certification standards and procedures.

Time can be stretched. It can be folded. The break in time is careening through the asteroid belts and beyond the furthest planets, bringing with it spices of stardust. Light exists even in the deepest of the dark abyss. It stares back as it always has. The ancient cosmos once believed this Heavy Light to be of a chaotic good that could not be controlled nor stopped… but we never intended to control it. We intended to roast it. This is the blend of light and dark roasts. It holds notes of honeyed caramel and sweet tobacco with a touch of clean earth. This is the Heavy Light.

“I’m going to find it and I’m going to drink it. I don’t know how yet. Maybe with dynamite.”
Exploration can take time. This was no exception. Team SeaZoo set off many moons ago, with hopes of discovering what they only believed they had experienced. These were beans that came together from all different corners of the Earth. This was new. Something different. Nobody believed them when they talked about it, so they did the only they could do… they named it after themselves. But what would be the scientific purpose of naming such a thing? Revenge.

The Tijuana Estuary Watershed is a uniquely special place to us at Visitor Coffee Roasters. We've both grown up and live in the South Bay region of San Diego and this coastal wetland, one of 30 reserves in the United States, has always served as a wondrous, daily escape into nature.
The reserve, adjacent to Tijuana, Imperial Beach and San Diego, encompasses beach, dune, mudflat, salt marsh, riparian, coastal sage scrub, and upland habitats. The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve (TRNERR) does wonderful, vital work connecting people in conservation of this natural Southern California and Northern Baja ecosystem to make this a place where human and natural communities, including the endangered Ridgway's Rail, can flourish together. VCR is beyond stoked to collaborate with TRNERR and donate a portion of proceeds from the sales of this coffee to Friends of San Diego Wildlife Refuges, Inc, towards reaching that goal.
This coffee, a full bodied cup with honeyed notes of peach and chocolate, is available both online and at the Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center. See you on the trails.

Origins.
Our single-origin coffees begin here: in the best coffee-growing regions on the planet.
Dumerso is a private washing station located just north of the town of Yirga Chefe, in the heart of the coveted Gedeo Zone—the narrow section of highland plateau dense with savvy farmers and fiercely competitive processors whose coffee is known the world over as “Yirgacheffe.” As a coffee terroir, Yirgacheffe has for decades been considered a benchmark for beauty and complexity in arabica coffee—known for being beguilingly ornate and jasmine-like when fully washed, and seductively punchy and sweet when sundried.
The station now employs over 400 individuals during harvest season, 95% of whom are women. During harvest farmers deliver ripe cherries daily to the Dumerso mill. Last harvest they achieved both organic and Rain Forest Alliance certification for the station, and they are currently undertaking a project to establish a local plant to convert coffee parchment into a kind of pressed firewood, as a way of boosting income for the station to distribute to growers and to help local farmers rely less on local forests for their daily source of fire.
